Mary Hennekam

Mary Hennekam

Mary Hennekam Ė A Profile

Mary was born in the U.K. of Irish parents, and the family migrated to Australia in 1949, moving around various country towns and ultimately settling in Victoria. Finishing her schooling at Kildare College in Traralgon, Mary took up a teaching career and for a few years taught at local primary schools, at the same time developing her interest in Fine Art. This interest eventually took her overseas, living and teaching in London for two years and taking advantage of school holidays to visit art galleries in the United Kingdom and Europe.

Mary returned to Australia in 1966 and began a Fine Arts Degree course. However, marriage, children and living on a farm forced her to abandon the course. In the 1970ís, Mary started learning to paint with tutors such as John Balmain, Wesley Penberthy, Peter Dunne and Joan Hirst. To further broaden her horizons, she undertook formal training in printmaking and drawing. Painting is still her first love.

She especially admires the works of Jeffrey Smart and David Hockney, and the influence of Smartís compositional style with its rectangles, verticals and clean lines may be interpreted in her broad precisely painted landscapes. However, Mary Hennekam finds her inspiration in the vast dry regions of outback Australia, its magnificent coastline and vibrant beaches.
